Sacramento is the capital of California, and for two and a half weeks every summer, it owns that title. The California State Fair returns to Cal Expo on July 17 and runs through August 2, 2026 — 17 days of rides, agriculture, food, and the kind of full-scale spectacle no other local event comes close to matching. Nothing else at this size happens here. That alone makes it worth your time.
The Basics

What the Fair Actually Is
The California State Fair is built around California agriculture and industry — the competitions, the exhibits, the commercial halls that reflect what the state actually produces. The rides and fried food are real, but they're not the whole story. The monorail running over the Cal Expo grounds remains one of the fair's signature draws: an unhurried look at the whole operation from above, the kind of thing you don't rush.
The midway delivers everything it promises. The Wave Swinger sends riders out in wide arcs against a cloudless July sky. A Ferris wheel goes up against the Sacramento sunset. It smells like kettle corn and engine grease. That combination is the fair doing exactly what a fair should do.
When to Go
Weekday evenings after 4 pm mean shorter lines and cooler temperatures — the strongest case for a Tuesday or Wednesday visit. Weekends between 10 am and noon work well for families with young kids who need an early exit before the heat peaks. The final weekend, July 31 through August 2, draws the biggest crowds of the run; go on a Thursday if you want the grounds at a manageable pace.
